Successes in Massage Therapy

Client One - Female, early 40's - Plays tennis recreationally. Recently started getting massage therapy sessions.

First session client was complaining of pain in right shoulder and restriction of range of motion when playing tennis. Pain was a constant dull ache with an occasional sharper pain when moving arm in certain directions. Client was unable to raise hand above her head completely with out pain.

I found trigger points along the scapula (shoulder blade), in rhomboids and middle and upper traps. "Rotator Cuff" (SITS) muscles and pectoralis major was overly tightened and shortened. I used myofascial release techniques to warm the muscle tissue of the back and shoulders. This also relaxed the client enough that she was able to "let go" of her muscles allowing me to use deeper and more specific techniques. I used manual therapies to include neuromuscular therapy to treat the trigger points and taught bands of the muscle tissue surrounding the scapula. Stretching rotator cuff muscles created more space in the shoulder joint. Client experienced a significant reduction in pain and improvement in her range of motion in her shoulder.

Second session about 2 weeks later, I continued the work I started in the first session and added active isolated stretching for pectoralis major and minor. This helped to release the restriction in the shoulder girdle allowing for more freedom in the range of motion at the shoulder joint.

Third session 2 weeks from previous massage, similar to second session but adding a little more stretching and less neuromuscular work.
Client now reports that her right shoulder is back to normal function and can now play tennis without pain. Client plans to continue getting  massage once a month to maintain the results she has experienced and prevent injury.

Client Two – Male, late 30’s, Avid tennis player, competes in local tournaments.

He has been coming to me for massage for over a year. He has noticed a major improvement in his performance and endurance during his game. His comment is below.

In leading an active lifestyle, one pushes the body to extreme limits. We tend to neglect the body or reward it for its endurance. I am a true believer that massage is one of the best ways to reward our bodies for all the stress we place on it, from being active to the stresses in our daily lives.

When you find a massage therapist you really like, you want to hold on to them for as long as you can. As a true believer to the benefits of massage, Tony is the best massage therapists in the North Florida area. I have had many massages in many of the most exclusive spa’s in the county and when you find someone like Tony you want continue that relationship for as long as you can.”

Re: Sports Massage and Tennis

Thank you for the posts, I am able to do a variety of techniques that help athletes. Some of which are Sports Massage, Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial Release, and other Deep Tissue techniques. I have had a lot of success with working with tennis players, swimmers, bikers, runners and even one of the Jags football players. I hope this is helpful information. Remember you can always email me at Tony@HealingHandsLMT.com if you have any specific questions.
