A friend of mine is an expert on nutrition and healthy weight loss. His expertise in a product line called Advocare has helped many people attain healthy lifestyles through proper nutrition. He writes: 

Weight loss is a struggle more than 100 million Americans battle every day. We live in a country where two-thirds of the population are overweight and one-third obese. There are many health risks associated with being overweight. Weight gain is something that is usually not immediate but rather happens gradually over time. However, one main reason these “diet” programs fail is because they often entail starving our bodies and denying us the foods we enjoy. We may see the pounds on the scale decrease for a certain period of time, but we are usually losing all of our lean body tissue and running low on energy. Then as soon as we fall off the wagon, we gain it all back and then some. 

I have struggled with my weight for most of my life and have only found one thing that has ever effected a permanent change in my health. I started the 24 Day Challenge in the winter of 2007, and I dropped from 250 pounds to 205 pounds in four months. Once I reached this weight, I set out to lose another 15 pounds bringing my weight loss down to 190 pounds.  I have maintained this weight for three years now.  I did not starve myself and I did not run 50 miles a week. I took a completely different approach. The answer is . . .
